Memory Transfer: a community Bot that moves what ChatGPT or Claude knows about you into Grok Bot

TL;DR

  • On the night of October 12, Brian Roemmele shared Memory Transfer, a Grok Bot you add from a template link. It brings over what ChatGPT or Claude has learned about you, so a new Bot doesn't start from zero.
  • You can either paste one prompt into your old assistant and hand the answer to the Bot, or give it your full ChatGPT or Claude data export.
  • Nothing is saved automatically. You go through the items one line at a time and keep only what you want. Each kept item is tagged with where it came from and when.
  • It's a community template, not something the Grok Bot team made. Read its page before you add it, and don't hand it more than you need to.

What happened

At 10:46 PM Central on October 12, Brian Roemmele posted:

Just under an hour later, at 11:43 PM, Elon Musk quoted it with four words, "Grok @Bot memory transfer." By Tuesday morning his post had been viewed more than 2.4 million times, and X's trending summary was listing Memory Transfer next to Grok Bot's own email addresses.

That trending summary calls it "the new Memory Transfer feature." It isn't a built-in setting. It's a Bot someone built and shared. The template page lists it as "Memory Transfer by Brian" and says it "was created by a third-party user." It also notes that the Bot "may act on your behalf" and that adding it means you accept the terms.

How it works

According to Brian's post, there are two ways in:

1. The quick way. Paste one prompt into your old ChatGPT or Claude chat, then send the reply to Memory Transfer. 2. The thorough way. Give it your full ChatGPT or Claude data export.

Either way, the Bot doesn't just dump everything in. Brian says you "review every item together, one line at a time," that "only what you keep gets saved," and that each item is tagged with its source and date. He also says other AIs' guesses don't become facts, and nothing you've already saved gets overwritten unless you say so.

That review step is the part worth copying, even if you never use this template. An old assistant's memory is full of half-right guesses. Bringing it over line by line means you get to fix them on the way in.

Getting your data out of the old assistant

If you go the export route, here's what the official help pages say.

ChatGPT. Open your profile menu, then Settings, Data controls, and Export under Export data, then Confirm export. You get an email or text when it's ready. OpenAI's help page says it can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after you get it. Self-service export isn't available on Business or Enterprise workspaces. OpenAI also warns that the download "can include sensitive account information."

Claude. Click your initials in the lower left, then Settings, Privacy, and Export data. A download link arrives by email and expires after 24 hours. Anthropic's help page says exports work on the web app or Claude Desktop, not the phone apps, and that on Team or Enterprise plans only the organization's Primary Owner can export.

A full export is your whole chat history, not just a list of facts about you. If you only want your preferences and a few key facts, the one-prompt way hands over much less.

Before you add it

  • It's someone else's Bot. The Grok Bot docs say shared Bots "are created by other users," and adding one accepts the third-party bot terms. Open the template page and read what it does first.
  • Adding it gives you your own copy. The same docs say adding a shared Bot creates a copy on your account. It doesn't give you the creator's computer, logins or chat history, and it doesn't give them yours.
  • Your Bots share one computer. If you upload an export, it sits on your Grok Bot computer, where your other Bots can reach it. Delete the file once the review is done.
  • Memory isn't the source of truth. The docs say memory "is not a substitute for an authoritative source." Keep facts that change, like your address or your plans, in the place they really live, and correct a Bot when its memory is out of date.
  • Copying a Bot doesn't copy its memory. Per the docs, duplicating a Bot carries its profile, skills and routines but not its learned memory. If you want a memory in a new Bot, you have to bring it in again.

A starter prompt for the quick way

If you'd rather try this without any template, you can ask your old assistant something like this and paste the answer into your Grok Bot:

> List what you've learned about me that would help a new assistant: my preferences, my ongoing projects, how I like answers written, and the people and tools I mention often. Mark anything you're guessing at as a guess. Leave out passwords, account numbers, health details and anything about other people.

Then ask your Grok Bot to go through it with you one item at a time before saving anything.
