Coding agent

Also called AI coding agent.

A coding agent is an AI agent that works on software tasks by reading a project, changing files, and using development tools, then preparing the changes for review.

Example

You ask it to fix a broken menu. It finds the relevant files, changes the menu behavior, runs the project's checks, and opens a pull request for you to review.

  1. Read the projectFind the files that matter.
  2. Change files on a branchThe main line stays untouched.
  3. Run checksTests, type checks, a build.
  4. Open a pull requestThe proposed change, ready to read.
  5. A person reviewsThen merge, then deploy.
From request to reviewed change. A passing check is limited evidence, and an opened pull request is not a live deploy.

Why it matters

Where it runs, what it can edit, and how changes are accepted vary by product. Grok Build is xAI's coding agent, used in a terminal, in scripts, or inside other apps. GitHub's cloud agent works on a repository and opens a pull request.

A Grok Bot is a different product. It can help with code on its cloud computer, but Grok Build is the one made for working inside a repository.

Common confusion

Autocomplete suggests the next few words of code. A coding agent carries out several steps. A passing check is limited evidence, and an opened pull request is not a live deploy.
