Pull request

Also called PR.

In plain English

A pull request asks people to review proposed code changes and combine them into a target branch.

Example

You open a pull request from your branch into a release branch. Reviewers comment, checks run, and the project merges when its rules say the change is ready.

Why it matters

The target is the base branch. It is not always main. A project can use a release branch or any other branch as the destination.

The project also decides what review is required. Some projects wait for a person to approve. Others let automation merge when the checks they configured have passed. Opening a pull request does not by itself publish a website.

Common confusion

A pull request is a proposal to combine changes. It is not automatically a request to merge into main, and it is not automatically waiting on a person.
