On October 6, Lingxi from the Grok Bot team posted that they were temporarily disabling Grok Bot voice mode for everyone to address an issue, and that it would be re-enabled for everyone pretty soon.

We haven't found an official post saying it's back. By October 9, though, Grok Bot team members were talking about voice again. Lauren Tan (@poteto), who leads Grok Bot, reposted a user who said Grok Bot voice is "wayy better than anything else" and asked another user which voice they picked.

On October 10, Lauren reposted another user who wrote that "Voice Chat is genuinely fun and stable."

If voice chat works when you try it, it's back for you.
How it works
1. Open one Bot's own chat. If the message box isn't empty, you'll see voice typing, not voice chat. 2. With the box empty, choose Start voice chat, the waveform button. 3. Allow the microphone. 4. You'll see Connecting on desktop, or Calling on a phone. 5. Talk. Mute, transcript and settings are on the call. 6. Hang up. 7. A voice chat card in the chat shows the length and the full transcript, and the Bot may follow up with results.
Three voice features, three different things
| Feature | What it does | How to start it |
|---|---|---|
| Voice chat | A live spoken conversation. The Bot talks back and keeps listening until you hang up. | Leave the message box empty and choose Start voice chat (the waveform button). |
| Voice typing | Turns your speech into text in the message box. You edit and send it, and the Bot replies in text. | Desktop: Start voice input, or Cmd+D / Ctrl+D (or hold the keys while you talk). Phone: Start dictation. |
| Voice memo | A recording the Bot sends you, with a transcript you can read. | Ask the Bot. For example, people tagged @bot on X with "send me a voice note summarizing this post." |

Start a call, step by step
| Step | What to do | What you'll see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the chat with one Bot | Its own chat, not a group |
| 2 | Clear the message box | Start voice chat shows only when the box is empty |
| 3 | Choose the waveform button | Your device may ask for microphone access |
| 4 | Wait for the connection | Connecting… on desktop, Calling… on the phone |
| 5 | Talk, and use the call controls if needed | Mute, Show transcript, Show settings |
| 6 | Hang up | A Voice chat card with the call length and transcript |
During a call
- Show settings changes the Voice, Speed and Language. Auto-detect picks the language from what you say.
- Show transcript lets you read along.
- You can open other chats while the call runs. On desktop, Return to the voice chat takes you back. Only one voice chat runs at a time.
- If you hang up while the Bot is still working on your request, the September 22 changelog says it finishes and posts the result in the chat.
Common questions
Can I voice chat in a group chat? No. Voice chat works with one Bot at a time. Open that Bot's own chat.
Can I call a teammate's Team Bot? The help page currently says voice chat isn't available with a teammate's Team Bot. The September 30 changelog said teammates can start a voice chat with a Team Bot. These may be in flux, so go by what you see in the app.
A call failed. What now? You'll see Voice chat failed, with "The call ended unexpectedly." or "The realtime connection failed." Choose Dismiss, check your connection, and start again. If microphone access was denied, allow it in your system settings. To pick a microphone, open Settings and choose one under Microphone.
I don't see the voice chat button. Make sure the message box is empty. If it is and the button still isn't there, update Grok Bot.
On the phone, dictation and voice chat clash. The help page says to stop dictation before you start a voice chat.
