The official help page Which AI models power Grok Bot? explains how this works: Grok Bot isn't tied to a single model. For each task, it uses the model most likely to give the best outcome. That can be a first-party xAI model or a third-party model from a provider on the sub-processor list, and the choice can differ from one request to the next.
How it works
1. You send a request. 2. Grok Bot picks the model most likely to do the task best: an xAI model, or a third-party model from the sub-processor list, such as Opus 5.5. 3. You get one answer in your chat. 4. Usage shows as Grok Bot usage, not by model.
The short version
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Is Grok Bot tied to one model? | No. It picks per task, and the pick can change from one request to the next. |
| Can I see which model handled a request? | No. Usage and spending views record it as Grok Bot usage, not by provider or model. |
| Can I pick or block a model? | No. There's no per-user or per-request model selection and no model picker in settings. |
| Does a task routed to Opus 5.5 cost more per token? | No. Per-token cost doesn't change. How fast you use your usage depends on the kind of work and the effort it takes. |
| Does my team's Cursor model allowlist apply? | No. Grok Bot isn't governed by a team's Cursor model allowlist or blocklist. |
| Which outside providers can it use? | Only providers on the sub-processor list, which is the official reference. |
What to do instead of hunting for a model setting
| Step | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open Settings > Usage & Billing | This is where you see where your usage went |
| 2 | Look at how often routines run | The Routines help page says each run spends usage, and an hourly schedule can use a week of usage in a day |
| 3 | Make big jobs smaller and clearer | Usage depends on the kind of work and how much effort it takes |
| 4 | Teams with data rules: read the sub-processor list and "Models and data" on the Grok Bot security page | That's where data handling is documented |
Common questions
Can I pick the model? No. The FAQ answers this directly: Grok Bot picks the model for each task, and there's no model picker.
Why did someone say "Opus in Grok"? Opus 5.5 is one of the third-party models the help page names. Grok Bot can route a task to it, but you can't ask for it.
Will my bill show Opus separately? No. It all shows as Grok Bot usage.
Does the model list stay the same? No. The help page says the set of models changes over time, and the sub-processor list is the authoritative reference.
