On September 30, some Grok Bot users started seeing a new dialog called Introducing Primary Bot (see Primary Bot in our glossary). We captured it that evening. This note covers what the dialog says, what the official docs already say about Bots, and what early users are posting. Botski is independent. It is not xAI, SpaceXAI, X, or Cursor.

What the dialog says
The dialog reads: “Primary Bot does work proactively. It is your go-to for everyday tasks, unblocks your work, and checks in when it needs your help.”
It has two buttons:
- Use an existing Bot
- Create Primary Bot
Going by the button labels, you can either give the role to a Bot you already have or start a new one. The dialog does not say more than that. It does not explain what changes for the other Bots on your account, or whether you can switch your Primary Bot later.
Is there an official announcement?
Not yet, as far as we could find. When we checked on the night of September 30, the Grok Bot docs, the Create and manage Bots page, and the SpaceXAI news page had no Primary Bot page, changelog entry, or announcement. We also found no post about it from the official @bot account. We will update this note when an official source appears.
So we don't have an official launch date. The earliest public post we found is from @melvindvivas, at about 11:46 AM CT on September 30: “Grok Bot has Primary Bot now.” That means the dialog was showing up for at least some people by midday September 30.
Where the idea comes from
Using one Bot as the lead isn't new. When Grok Bot launched on August 11, SpaceXAI's launch post said people inside the company often run several Bots in parallel, “with one to manage the others,” and described “a chief of staff” on top with a specialist for each lane. The same post says Bots “become more proactive” over time, “picking up work before you need to ask.”
The docs already support this setup. Create and manage Bots suggests giving one Bot ownership of an end-to-end outcome and adding specialist Bots only when needed. The docs overview says Bots can message each other, share context in group chats, and pass ownership of a task.
Replying to the first post, @senb0n22a said most people “were already using Grok Bot this way anyways,” so a shortcut for making the primary Bot is “a clean way to do this.”
Primary Bot, a regular Bot, and a Team Bot
Here is what we can say with sources, and what we can't:
- A regular Bot is, per the docs, a durable AI teammate with a name, a job, its own conversation, and context that builds up over time. All of your Bots share one cloud computer (overview).
- A Primary Bot, according to the dialog, is the Bot that works proactively as your go-to for everyday tasks. No official source yet says whether it gets any extra abilities or permissions. The Use an existing Bot button suggests a Primary Bot is still an ordinary Bot on your account that takes on the role.
- A Team Bot is something else. The Team Bots docs describe it as one Bot your whole team talks to, each person in their own chat, with team memory the owner maintains. The same docs say that for “an everyday assistant that works from your own accounts and memories,” you should keep a personal Bot. The dialog's “everyday tasks” wording points that way too, but nothing official yet says whether a Team Bot can be a Primary Bot.
What early users report
@melvindvivas followed up that night. He said the feature “solved my attention problem.” He made a Chief of Staff Bot that tells him what is happening across all his Bots, so he no longer checks them one by one, and he can ask his primary Bot to delegate work and report back. That is one user's setup, not an official description of the feature.
Some people also see it as a response to OpenAI's dots, which OpenAI introduced the day before (9to5Google). The first post said as much (“I guess an answer to Dots”). That is opinion, not something SpaceXAI has said.
If you see the dialog
- If you already have a Bot that coordinates the others, Use an existing Bot looks like the option that keeps its memory and context.
- If you are new, Create Primary Bot gives you a starting point. Give it one concrete everyday task first, the way the docs suggest for any new Bot.
- A Bot that works proactively still uses the same approvals. The overview says a Bot comes back when something needs your approval and hands you steps that need a human.
Independent, not xAI
