Grok Bot can help double-check your taxes

TL;DR

  • On October 14 Elon Musk posted that Grok Bot can help with your taxes, quoting people who handed a Bot a pile of returns and forms.
  • Jason Freedman dumped 266 files (four years of returns, K-1s, 1099s, mortgage and HSA records, CPA email) and asked the Bot to double-check his CPA. He says it found missing mortgage interest, double-counted HSA contributions, and other issues; he sent the list to his CPA and signed an amended return the same afternoon.
  • Another user with overseas reporting said the Bot found and organized documents, filled forms on its computer, and left him to review and submit.
  • This is a review helper, not a filing service and not tax advice. Keep sending, publishing, and money moves behind your approval. Botski is independent of xAI.

What happened

Late on October 13, Jason Freedman posted what he did:

In the full post he says the Bot flagged mortgage interest left off a 2022 return, HSA payroll contributions counted twice for four years, a missing IRA form, home-office errors, two missing K-1s, an outdated 1099, unclaimed startup losses, and a retirement contribution the return deducted that had not been deposited. He forwarded the findings to his CPA, reviewed the amended return with the Bot, and said the whole loop took a few hours with about 90 seconds of his attention. His prompt was short: "Please do a thorough review of my taxes and help me understand if my CPA made any mistakes" plus "Think deeply."

Overnight into October 14, Elon Musk quoted that thread and another complex-tax story:

The second quote is Texas Twins Dad, who wrote that Grok Bot saved more than $1,000 on a complex overseas filing: the Bot pulled documents from email and bank accounts, filled forms on its own computer, and he reviewed before submitting.

By mid-morning Central, X's trending summary was grouping those posts under "Grok Bot Handles Taxes and Creative Tasks with Ease."

Why this fits how Grok Bot works

Official docs say each Bot runs on a persistent cloud computer with a browser, files, and terminal, so it can sort a messy folder, open PDFs, and draft a checklist instead of only chatting (Grok Bot overview). The changelog already lists email access and purchase approvals; the tax stories are people using that same computer for paperwork.

None of that means the Bot is your CPA. Freedman still sent every fix through his accountant. The overseas-filing post still ends with he reviewed and submitted.

How to try a careful review

1. Collect the files you already trust: prior returns, W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, mortgage and brokerage statements, HSA/IRA records, and (if you want) mail with your CPA. 2. Put them in one place the Bot can read (a folder on its computer, or attachments you upload). 3. Ask for a review, not a filing: reuse Freedman's prompt, or ask for a numbered list of possible issues with the source file for each claim. 4. Tell it the stop line up front: do not email your CPA, file anything, or move money until you say so. 5. Read the list yourself. Anything that looks real goes to a licensed human. Anything that looks wrong, ask the Bot to show the page or line it used.

Keep the dangerous steps behind you

The approvals, security, and privacy page says to put sending messages, publishing, purchases, deletions, and production changes behind your approval, and to take over yourself for passwords, two-factor codes, CAPTCHAs, and payment confirmations. Tax season has all of those: CPA email, IRS or state portals, and bank logins.

Also remember: all of your Bots share one cloud computer. Files you drop for a tax review are available to every Bot on your account until you remove them. Sign out of sites you do not want shared, and delete sensitive temp files when you are done.

What this post is not

  • Not tax, legal, or accounting advice
  • Not a promise that a Bot will find every error or save you money
  • Not a substitute for a licensed tax preparer (Botski writes beginner notes from public posts and docs)

If you try it, treat the Bot like a second pair of eyes on a stack you already have, then let a human decide what to file.
