Your Grok Bot can make phone calls now. One cut a Comcast bill by almost $500 a year

Everyone has a call they keep putting off: the cable bill, the doctor's office, the company you can't cancel online. Grok Bot can now make those calls for you. You say who to call and why. It dials, gets through the phone menu, waits on hold, talks to the person, and sends you the transcript.

This week people started sharing what happened on their real calls. Here's what they got done, what the rules are, and how to try it yourself.

The hook: about $500 a year off a Comcast bill

On November 3, Peter Yang posted a real call in which his Grok Bot negotiated with Comcast. In his words, the call cut his "internet bill by almost $500 a year" (Peter Yang on X).

His highlights from the call:

  • It answered small talk ("How's the weather?").
  • It turned down three upsells from the rep.
  • It pushed back with a competitor's lower offer.

He also says Grok Bot "can now call US businesses for you," and calls it "one of my favorite AI features ever." The full call is in his video.

@petergyang

Grok @Bot can now call US businesses for you, and it's one of my favorite AI features ever. Here's my new video where I play a real call of my bot successfully negotiating with Comcast to cut my internet bill by almost $500 a year.

What a Grok Bot does on a call

Elon Musk described the feature on October 25: Grok Bot "can now call someone or a business for you, make a request on your behalf, take notes on the response and send you a note summarizing the conversation" (Elon Musk on X).

Sawyer Merritt explained what it looks like while a call is running. "You just tell it who to call and why, and it handles the conversation for you." You see a live transcript. If the Bot needs something from you mid-call, "a little answer box pops up where you type/select your response, and Grok relays it to the person on the phone" (Sawyer Merritt on X). His post includes the call audio.

@SawyerMerritt

Grok @Bot's new calling feature is very impressive. You just tell it who to call and why, and it handles the conversation for you.

Five real calls from this week

1. A same-day doctor's appointment, booked while driving. Min Choi's daughter hurt her foot at dance practice. Grok Bot suggested a few nearby options, including a pediatric orthopedist with X-rays on site, and called when the office opened. It "got her in at 9:30 the same day." When the receptionist asked for more information, it asked him in real time. It also got the insurance, payment options and pricing, had the intake forms sent to his email, and put the appointment on his calendar. "The receptionist knew the call was recorded, and I could review the recording afterward" (Min Choi on X). Elon Musk shared the post: Grok Bot "can research which doctors are the best in your area, call them by phone and make an appointment!" (Elon Musk on X).

@minchoi

Grok Bot just made a doctor's appointment for me while I was driving...

2. $100 back from Verizon Fios. JB Dub asked his Bot to call Verizon Fios about a missing customer-retention e-gift. It "dialed, sat through the IVR, verified the account with me via little answer cards when they needed my PIN / one-time code, stayed on hold," and got Promotions to reorder the $100 gift card to his email. The call ran about 51 minutes. He spent it at his son's flag football practice, typing in a few codes between plays (JB Dub on X).

Grok @Bot’s phone calling just got me a real $100.

3. A menu, the hold music, and a summary. Bruno Munhoz was close to canceling his plan until Grok Bot "starts making phone calls for me. Navigates the menu, sits on hold, sends me a summary" (Bruno Munhoz on X).

@brunomunhozCRO

Then Grok Bot starts making phone calls for me. Navigates the menu, sits on hold, sends me a summary.

4. A test call to your own phone. Carolina Dill tried it on herself first. Her Bot called her phone, opened with "I'm a virtual assistant calling for Carolina Dill on a recorded line," and sang about a minute of an original song. The whole call showed up in the chat as a live transcript (Carolina Dill on X). It's a low-stakes way to hear what the person on the other end will hear.

@CarolinaDill

A Grok Bot called my phone this morning and sang me a song.

5. A cancellation that didn't go through. Not every call ends in a win. Enzo Fiore had his Bot call a company to cancel a subscription. He "didn't sit on hold" and "just read the transcript after," but "the rep didn't want to take action on the account with AI" (Enzo Fiore on X). Some companies will still want to talk to you, so plan for that.

@realenzofiore

Today I had @bot call a company and attempt to cancel a subscription for me.

The rules, from the Grok Bot Terms

The Grok Bot Terms cover calls in section 2.7. In short:

  • You're the caller of record. You're responsible for following call laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and for having consent from the people you call. The terms say you "may only call people who have agreed to hear from" you.
  • No marketing or mass calls, and no fraud, harassment, impersonation, or calls to emergency services.
  • It says it's an AI. Calls "identify themselves as made by a virtual assistant on Customer's behalf and may be recorded," and you can't turn that off.
  • It isn't a phone service. It can't reach emergency services. Calls may come from temporary numbers that xAI can reclaim, and xAI can block numbers or regions, or limit or end calls.

How to try it

1. Have a Grok Bot. The Grok Bot docs cover getting started. 2. Ask in plain words. Say who to call, why, and what result you want. Elon Musk's advice: "Try asking Grok @Bot to make calls!" (Elon Musk on X). 3. Accept the calling card the first time. Carolina Dill says a phone call card appeared in her Grok Bot iPhone app, and she had to tap Accept before her Bot could call. The card said calls won't be used for marketing or mass calls, scams or fraud, or harassment or threats (Carolina Dill on X). 4. Stay nearby for account checks. If the business needs a PIN or a one-time code, an answer box pops up in the chat. Respond there and the Bot relays it (Sawyer Merritt, JB Dub). 5. Read the transcript. It shows what was actually agreed, not just whether the call connected.

Good to know: Carolina Dill says it only works in the USA. While traveling abroad she had to connect to her US network to use it (Carolina Dill on X). Peter Yang also describes it as calling "US businesses" (Peter Yang on X).

Want it to sound like you? HeyGen says Grok Bot calls can use HeyGen Voice so they "sound just like you" (HeyGen on X). That's HeyGen's claim; we haven't seen an xAI page on it yet.

@HeyGen

Grok @bot makes your phone calls now, and it sounds just like you, thanks to HeyGen Voice.

Start with one call

Start with one call you've been dreading. A bill to bring down, an appointment to book, a refund someone owes you. Tell your Bot exactly what counts as a win and what it shouldn't agree to, then read the transcript when it's done.
