Webhook
Also called web hook.
A webhook is a message a service sends to a web address you chose when a subscribed event happens.
Example
A form tool sends a webhook to your app each time someone submits the form. Your app adds a row. Nothing polls the form overnight.
Why it matters
You do not poll the service every minute. The service calls your address when the event occurs. The address should be one you control, and the message should be checked before you act on it.
Common confusion
A webhook is an incoming event message. It is not an API keyAn API key is a credential an application sends so an API can identify or authorize the caller., and it is not a person clicking a button.
