Artificial intelligence is software that performs tasks associated with human abilities, such as recognizing patterns, understanding language, and making predictions.
Example
A bot reads a stack of invoices and predicts which fields are the total and the due date. That task is artificial intelligence. Whether it may send a payment is a separate permission.
Why it matters
The term covers many techniques. A glossary entry does not need the research history. For a beginner, it is enough to know that the software is doing a task people associate with judgment or language, and that the product around it decides what the software is allowed to do.
Common confusion
Artificial intelligence is not a guarantee of correctness, and it is not a specific product name.
