AI assistant

Also called personal AI assistant, personal assistant, persistent AI assistant, persistent assistant.

An AI assistant helps people with information or work, such as explaining, writing, planning, or completing tasks. Some only talk; others can use tools and act.

Example

You ask for a weekly reading plan. The assistant uses your saved preference for short sessions and the books you picked, then drafts the plan for you to adjust.

  • ChatbotTalks with you in a conversation.
  • AI assistantHelps with your information and tasks. May remember your preferences.
  • AI agentChooses steps and uses tools toward a goal.
Talk, help, act. One product can sit in more than one column. You chat with a Grok Bot like an assistant, and it can work as an agent on its cloud computer.

Why it matters

Assistant is the family name. A personal AI assistant tailors that help to one person, using preferences or context that person allowed it to use. Some assistants only answer in a conversation. Others can also use tools, connected apps, or a computer.

A Grok Bot is one kind of assistant: a named teammate that keeps context and does tasks on the account's cloud computer. A chat in Grok is another kind. ChatGPT dots, Meta's Muse, Instinct, and Google's CC are other assistants with their own rules.

Persistent assistant

A persistent assistant keeps some identity, instructions, memory, or working environment across separate conversations, so you can return to ongoing work instead of starting over.

Persistence describes what survives between sessions. It does not promise constant activity, perfect memory, or unlimited storage. A Grok Bot keeps its name and the account's cloud computer between chats, but it still reads the latest notes before it continues.

Common confusion

Personal describes who the help is tailored to. It does not say whether the assistant acts on its own. A personal assistant can be a chatbot, an agent, or both, and connecting an account does not mean every action is allowed.
