EngineeringDo bots work when your laptop is closed?
Yes — for work on the cloud computer. Official docs: closing the Grok Bot app or your laptop does not stop a background turn or a scheduled task.
This is “delegate and leave”: hand off a clear job, then check results when you are back. It is not a promise that every site will let automation finish unattended.
What keeps going
The FAQ says the same thing in product words: Bot work runs on the cloud computer. Closing the app, the laptop, or the phone does not stop a background turn or a routine. A routine is the scheduled or event-driven job. The turn is the work already in motion.
Open Agent Computer later to watch or take over. You can leave the preview while the cloud work continues.
What still waits for you
If the Bot needs a password, a two-factor code, a CAPTCHA, a payment check, or a site that demands a person, it should hand you the computer. Do not paste passwords or one-time codes into the chat.
Sends, spends, deletes, and public posts stay behind approval. A site can also block automation or expire a login. “The laptop is closed” does not mean “every website agreed.”
One computer, separate screens
Background work still uses the one cloud computer on your account, not a machine per Bot. Each Bot has its own screen, and one Bot runs one computer-use task on that screen at a time. Several Bots can work in parallel. They still share files and logins. See shared computer security.
Not a Grok Build session
Grok Build can run a command in the background while a coding chat continues. That session is on the coding agent, in a project. Closing this page’s “laptop closed” answer does not describe it. The product split is on Grok, Grok Bot, and Grok Build.
Tips
- Prefer a connector when one exists; browser paths break more often.
- Keep sends and spends behind approval.
- Hiding a Bot does not pause it or its routines. Stop the work on purpose. See how to stop a bot task.
- If nothing moves, see When your Grok Bot gets stuck.
