In plain English
Markdown is a simple way to format plain text, using marks like # for headings and * for lists.
Example
You write "## Steps" on its own line, and the page shows a heading called Steps.
Why it matters
GitHub's docs show Markdown syntax for headings, bold text, lists, links, and code. The file stays readable as plain text, and apps turn it into formatted pages. Instruction files, READMEs, and many blog posts are written in Markdown.
