Spending limit

Also called spend limit, hard spend limit, spend cap.

A spending limit is a cap on how much money an account is allowed to use with a service.

Example

An API account is still under its per-minute rate limit, and it still has usage left, but the monthly spend limit is reached. Further requests are refused until the limit is raised or the next period starts. The exact reset belongs to that service.

Why it matters

OpenAI's API docs describe a monthly spend limit you configure for an organization or a project. A spend alert only notifies you. A hard spend limit can refuse further requests after tracked spend reaches the amount you set. The docs also say that cutoff is not instant, so a little extra spend can be recorded while the limit catches up.

OpenAI's own usage limit, based on the account's tier, is a separate cap. A rate limit is different again: it counts requests or tokens in a short window, such as a minute. This glossary does not list prices.

How it shows up on bot.ski

On bot.ski, the Rate limit and Usage limit pages already separate those caps, and this page is the money cap they name. The public site does not show a spend meter and does not list prices.

Common confusion

A spending limit is not a rate limit and not a usage limit. An alert that only sends a message is not a hard cap. This page is not a price list.
